Based on analysis from NOAA's Global Monitoring Lab, global average atmospheric carbon dioxide was 414.72 parts per million in 2021, setting a new record high despite the continued economic drag from the COVID-19 pandemic. Countless scientists, climate experts, and government officials agree that 350 parts per million is the “safe” level of carbon dioxide -- a level that has been exceeded for decades.

Significantly reducing annual greenhouse gas emissions is the first step to addressing this problem, but in order to help reverse the damage that has already been done, efforts must also be made to pull carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and sequester it away. Fortunately there are a number of solutions being implemented, ranging from improved farming practices to carbon-capture factories. For this presentation, we'll explore the role forests play in carbon sequestration and how cities like Bellingham can best make use of this promising solution.

This event will begin with a two-part presentation and halfway through, we'll separate into conversation break-out groups for a short time. After the conclusion of the presentation, there will be a mixer featuring a photo exhibition for both attendees and the general public with wines, coffee and tea available for purchase from Black Fern Coffee.
